| Name: Ryder Anderson House: Slytherin Year: First
1. What is the spell's incantation (Incendio) etymology?
Latin:
Incendio is the singular version of Incendium, which means fire, and more literally means "to destroy with fire."
Spanish:
Incendio is directly translated to the word fire, and is also the first person singular version of the verb Incendium, which means "to set fire to."
2. Name other spells which have similar effects to the Fire-Making Spell.
The most common spell that is similar to Incendio is the Bluebell Flames spell. Like Incendio, when cast, the spell creates a flame; however, the Bluebell Flames spell produces a blue flame that is nondestructive and only heats the immediate area. The caster can actually hold the flame in his or her hand without being burned, and carry it around with them as desired.
3. Name a few known practitioners of the spell.
While Incendio is a common charm, and most witches and wizards use it somewhat regularly, there are several particularly interesting documented cases of the spell.
Peter Pettigrew: When Lord Voldemort returned to power after being destroyed by the infant Harry Potter, Pettigrew used Incendio to light the fire beneath the cauldron that Voldemort was dropped into, allowing him to return to a human state.
Thorfinn Rowle: In the year 1997, Death Eater Rowle used a powerful form of Incendio to set fire to the cabin of Rubeus Hagrid, the grounds-keeper at the time.
Hermione Granger/Harry Potter: Both Granger and Potter used Incendio in 1988 in an attempt to destroy the locket of Salazar Slytherin, which had been turned into a Horcrux by Lord Voldemort.
BONUS. In which situations can the spell come in handy?
While Incendio can be useful in many everyday situations, such as lighting the fireplace or the burner on the stove, it also has several other uses. The charm can be used offensively or defensively in a dire situation, and would prove particularly useful against creatures that prefer the darkness or have a fear of light, such as the gytrash. |
