| Professor Greene (wow that sounds odd, Cj thought to herself) lounged in her old wooden chair behind a desk cluttered with plants and paperwork. She was happy she didn't have a particularly mediocre classroom. The greenhouses were beautiful places to work and teach. Cj worked hard to make them interesting. Lined on the walls were colorful plants, some blowing perfume from their petals, others changing colors every few moments.
Students came in, at what seemed to be, within the same minute. All filed to the tables, most kids got in groups with their housemates. Cj got up from her position behind the desk and clapped her dirt-covered hands together. "Alrighty, today we will be learning about mandrakes! In front of you," she paused, gesturing towards the plants on the tables, "are mandrake plants. These mandrakes are merely in the baby state of growth. If someone should hear their screams, they will, at most, be knocked out for just a wee bit. Let's get down and dirty!"
Cj then instructed how to properly put on the provided earmuffs. She then proceeded to flick her wand at the clouded chalk board accommodating the wall behind her.
Whenever unearthed, the root screams. The scream of a mature Mandrake when it is unearthed will kill any person who hears it, but a young Mandrake's screams will usually only knock a person out for several hours. When Hogwarts students study Mandrakes in Herbology class, Cj Greene has the students wear earmuffs to protect their ears from the Mandrake's cries. A Mandrake's scream is very similar to (if not the same as) a banshee's scream, which is also fatal.
Mandrakes not only resemble humans, but can also have the same behaviors as them. Mandrakes can become very moody and inactive, but during their teens, they are known to party, like normal teenagers. When they come of age, they can move into each other's territories. When matured, Mandrakes can be cut up to serve as a prime ingredient for the Mandrake Restorative Draught, which is used to cure those who have been Petrified.
The Dugbog's favorite food is Mandrakes, which leads to Mandrake-growers finding nothing but a bloody mess when pulling their plants out. Flesh-Eating Slugs are known to favor Mandrakes. Their leaves can be used in Potions, additionally, the Mandrake forms an essential part of most antidotes. (credit to harrypotter.wikia.com)

1. Banshee.
2. Mandrakes have super loud and potentially fatal screams so if one was to listen to this scream without the protection earmuffs provides, they would be injured. If it was a baby, they would be knocked out for several hours and if it was a mature plant, there is a high chance of death for this poor, stupid human. That wouldn't be very fun.
3. Mandrakes resemble humans in appearance. Like us, they can become moody and not feel like doing anything. But in their teenage years, like stupid human teenagers who I dislike immensely, they are known to party and enjoy life.
4. Mandrakes are closely related to the subject of Potions and subsequently, Healing. This is because they are - when mature - a prime ingredient for the Mandrake Restorative Draught, which is used to heal petrified people. | |
