Merpeople are magical beasts who are half-human and half-fish, with a long tail and a human-like upper-body. There are a lot of different types of Merpeople in different places around the world and separate species are very different to one another.

One example of a species of Merpeople are the Selkies who live in the lake here at Hogwarts and around Scotland. Other species live around the world; the Sirens live in Greece and the Merrows in Ireland.

As I said, the appearance of Merpeople varies. It is said that the warmer the water the beasts inhabit, the more beautiful they are. The Sirens of hot Greece are very like muggle interpretations of Merpeople, whereas the Selkies in Scotland are hideous because of the cold water here. Most of the Selkies have green hair, yellow eyes, and grey skin.

There is a legend about sirens, which says they sit on dangerous rocks. They draw sailors in with their incredibly beauty and then the sailors are left shipwrecked because of the dangerous waters they go into because of these creatures.
