Spreading Your Wings (Closed)

Maya sat in the common room surrounded by the comforting noise of other students interacting. When she was a first year she used to feel overwhelmed sitting here, surrounded by so many students, but now she took it in her stride.

She hadn't returned to her dormitory after classes as she was getting sick of the same old scenery and deciding that the clouds looked treacherous remained inside, beside the comfort of the fire. She couldn't face the library and the unbearable silence as she just felt like some light reading.

When she had reached the common room after dinner she chose a comfy seat, beside the window away from everyone else, but still close enough to the large burning fire to feel the effect of its heat. She read her book in silence for a while, until she lost interest in it. Putting it down she looked out the window and was immediately glad that she chose not to venture the grounds. The rain lashed against the window forcefully, making her unconsciously shiver to herself.

Turning her attention to the students in the common room her gaze fell on a boy sitting alone. Maya recognised him from the sorting ceremony. He was a new first year student and she hadn't introduced herself yet. Trying to catch his eye from across the room, Maya stood up and approached the sullen looking boy. She hoped that he didn't mind her interrupting him. She couldn't tell what he was doing from this far away but she presumed he would welcome the company, she surely would. Maya could easily recall how hard it was to make friends in first year, she was glad that she had Kynan and how much they had in common. She sometimes found it difficult to branch out, but now that she was in second year she felt that it was her turn to reach out to the first years and offer a welcoming hand.

"Hey there. Your new here, right?" Maya felt that she was clearly stating the obvious. "So what's your name?" Maya asked, trying to keep a friendly demeanor.
