| Moving In
Sophia smiled as she gently inserted the old skeleton key into the lock. She had decided to move out of her cluttered apartment in the city to a more scenic location with plenty of fresh air and space. Although the cottage was small, it was cozy and had plenty of charm, which was absolutely what Sophia was looking for. Not a horrible, giant and empty mansion like Razell Manor but instead a nice little house on a lake or similar, with plenty of wildlife and plants.
She dragged the five boxes that contained all her personal items through the trees and into the tiny space that was the sort of coat and mudroom, for lack of a better term. Some fancy people might have called it a tiny foyer, but that made no sense to Sophia whatsoever. All the boxes were labeled in clear, large printed handwriting, and she opened up the second one first. This had her "delicate" items, and she wanted to see how the journey had gone for them. Well, the damage was fairly minimal, with everything wrapped in tissue paper. Only the china was slightly cracked, but that was fine it could be fixed. And besides, she hadn't really liked that set anyway.
Next she went back outside and groaned. Now she would have to drag the furniture inside. After doing so, which took about a half an hour, she unpacked the first box, which contained most of her everyday clothes. She put them in the bureau that was the only piece of furniture she’d taken from her parents’ house. She hadn’t wanted to spend more money on furniture than she needed to, while at the same time only taking what she needed. Already in the cottage was a tiny bed with a moderately soft mattress that suited Sophia just fine, despite being used to feather pillows, comforters, and satin sheets. She’d never liked all that anyway.
After folding the handmade quilt over the rail at the end of the bed, she went to the kitchen and unpacked all the silverware and pots & pans. Once all the unpacking was done, she folded the boxes and got them into a nice stack, then threw them in the recycling. She then decided to explore the surrounding wood as it was a beautiful day not to be wasted. |
