The lesson was scheduled within a spare class-room close to his own heart of operations; his office. With a quick skuttle of barely a minute's pace, Horatio ploughed the door open and stepped in, letting the door rebound off the wall and closing back with the force that was presented upon it, causing a disruption to the bickering he could hear from the other side of the castle, he guessed. The walk to the front of the class gave enough time for the bored students to clamber back into their designated seats and straighten their mis-matched attire, finally spinning at the end of his stride to face his young class.
"Right, straight into it then, get your books out and we'll go from there. Don't open 'em yet, we'll see who's swotted up so far til now." He smiles, backing up to bring down the blackboard behind him with an almight pull of his strength, taking up a piece of chalk from the previous teacher's desk and starts to write, generally a hands-on person.

Three main modes of transport used in the wizarding/witchy community.

1.

Turning back to sit half-upon one of a pupil's desk with a slow wink as if to slyly win over a heart in the room, Horatio claps his hands together and begins to speak out number one, blank upon the board.
"The most favoured of all the lot amongst witches and wizards started way, way back in the late thirteenth century. An experimenting witch by the name of Ignatia Wildsmith took upon herself to test a powderous concoction with a sprinkle on several objects; effectively mimicing the method of a Portkey, but to the added affect that someone could transport themselves back and forth to any given point, instead of a one-way ticket to a fixed destination on touch of the item. The myth goes that nothing worked and the frustrated lady threw the powder she had ground herself into the fireplace, turning the flames emerald green. Of course someone here must know what I'm talking about. Wanna take a shot at a guess.. Anyone?" He looks around for raised hands.

Kynan was excited for his first flying lesson as he got to do something outdoors. Okay, Herbology doesn't count, he reasoned with himself. It's about plants. Flying is a sport! Back at home, he loved sports and was a big fan of football. Learning a wizard sport seemed like an amazing idea. But his spirits were then crushed when he learned that the lesson would be inside.

He shook his head and tried to be positive. Maybe next time, he thought as he entered the classroom and sat down in a random chair. After taking out his books, he watched the Professor write down something on the blackboard. Kynan suddenly found himself very interested in the lesson and took down notes (which he always hated doing). When Professor Crown asked a question, though, Kynan had no idea what the answer was. He hadn't bothered reading his schoolbooks unless it was for some research. He looked around and wondered if anyone else was going to answer.

After finding the classroom with some difficulty Maya breathed a sigh of relief realising that she wasn't late. She quickly made her way into the nearest seat as the Professor entered the room. She realised she was sitting across from quite student Kynan that she had met out in the grounds and gave him a quick, friendly smile. Eagerly anticipating the subject as she had loved watching quidditch so far and loved all kinds of sports in the muggle world she took out her book, some parchment and a quill.

Maya watched as he started the class straight away and began to write on the blackboard, when he turned around and winked at the room of students she had to stifle a laugh, he was a good looking man she thought to herself.

"Is that how she invented floo powder?" Maya guessed as no one else had put themselves toward. She had travelled  it once before, but was very young so the memory was hazy.

Pointing suddenly at the Slytherin child after searching confused and befuddled heads, clearly racking their brains for an answer, Horatio smiles with glee, a huge admiration for the aspiring student right underneath his nose.
"Twenty points to Slytherin." He chuckles, patting the girl upon the head and shifting off her desk, coat tails following, to make long, slow strides further on into the depths of his small class.
"Floo transport! Everyone can use it!" He flails his hands into the air with clearness of what he's talking about. "Developed from the Floo plant, any witch or wizard that has their fireplace connected to the Network via the Authority of the Ministry, can travel to any other linked connection with a clear, precisely worded destination. It can also be used for contact by just sticking your head into the green flames. Also a great, proven way frighten the living daylights out of any unsuspecting victim." He laughs, remembering the Halloween punch bowl incident of 1998.

Picking up the piece of chalk with his wand from far away this time, he instructs the to write the answer along the numbered bullet-point; (The hand-writing is much more elegant than his straight-forward, non-joined capital block) 1. Floo Network.

2.

"Next!" He calls, twirling around from reaching the far wall and stepping between two of the back desks of the classroom. "The most dangerous method of transport, surprisingly, even has a term for a disaster involved with it's usage, it's that common. Many an ill-thought of destination or stray thought.. or even, youthfulness, can result in horrific injuries called 'Splinching', where wounds of merit can be struck upon the user, limbs being removed from the body and through this, even fatality can occur." He gives the wide eyes of seriousness to his whole class, placing his hands together and wiping his palms around each twin. "A wise Minister by the name of Wilkie Twycross gave us the rule of the three D's: Determination, Destination and Deliberation, to help significantly with people attempting to use this method for the first, or even the hundreth time.
Futhermore, you must be seventeen and a holder of a licence to really successfully know how to preform this action, or you ride, what's called 'Side-Along', if you are exempt from except within the company of a fully-fledged knowledgable. An-y thoughts class?" He puckers his lips in thought, waiting for the second answer.

After listening to Professor Crown's description of the second method of magical transportation, Ryland knew he had this one. The Three D's gave it away. Looking at the Professor, Ryland said: "That would be Apparition, wouldn't it, sir?"

Darcy listened closely to all that was said. She had known the transport to be floo powder, but she had been too slow. Next time, she thought. But the next time, she didn't know the answer. However, a Gryffindor replied to the answer, and she crossed her fingers that he was right, already feeling her competitive senses acting up for the house's hope to win the house cup.

Currently, that didn't really look too bright. But hopefully, they got the chance now.

Marie had slipped in and sat in the back of the class. Flying wasn't necessarily the subject she was most excited about, but it was necessary for first years. Nonetheless, she listed quietly as the professor began. His question wasn't too hard, but Marie was not inclined to talk aloud during class. However, she smiled brightly when she realized Maya had answered the question correctly.

The second question was a bit tougher, and she thought about the answer only briefly before her mind started to wander. Marie found herself looking around the room at her fellow students. This was going to be a long class.

Leon sat quietly in the room, listening carefully and taking notes. Flying was definitely a class he was excited about, and this information was truly fascinating to him. Of course he had no clue how to answer the professor's questions, but he was here to learn and he was definitely doing that already.

A flat palm slapped down upon the Gryffindor's school-desk, "BOOM!" Horatio grinned mischieviously at the lad, soon realising his gaff at viewing the whole shaken-up class and quietly pardoning himself for it. At least it was never boring here, he thought.
"Nicely recollected Marcotte, yes, twenty points. Apparation has been with us since Merlin's age, and for an example of what I was previously saying, if you'd turn to page twenty-seven of your History of Quidditch, you will see an aftermath of a minor splinching accident resulting in fair blood loss. For those who are squeemish, it looks like someone has tattooed a sun-storm on your person with a white-hot dagger pressed down about an inch. Not nice."
Horatio shakes his head, continuing with a small pause, "If found to be under the age, under qualified or under the influence," He remembered that one time, "when apperating, you can receive a lovely, -expensive- visit from the Ministry of Magic in the form of AMRS; the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad. They can issue fines based on your circumstance. Similar to the muggle AA, if you've reached that in your studies, for cars, only for people instead." He tells his class with a broad grin, dipping his head slightly after composing himself from a glance at the picture shown on their books on presentation of splinching disasters through the years.
"Finally, House Elves are the only other creature, apart from us, to be able to utilise their ability to apparate, but with delicate ease, forming a natural skill since early birth. Also, they cannot be affected by something called an anti-disapperation jinx - a reason why you don't see this action at all in Hogwarts - which says what it pretty much does on the tin: keeps you rooted to the spot, unable to take off."

With a flick of his wand, the professor writes further with the piece of chalk before centring against the wall of windows, the only source of natural light into the room, viewing his whole class with ease.

2. Dis/Apparation

3. Broom Flight

"If you think you were getting points for that last answer, tough cheddar: too easy. However, name me some makes of brooms; points for obscure, independant ones." The wand is kept out, ready to take the lashing of answers from his students.

Maya smiled to herself, after Professor Crown patted her on the head and awarded her 20 house points. She took notes notes down as he wrote up some information on the blackboard.

She looked around the classroom as Professor Crown continued on with his lesson and realised it was a lot fuller now. When he asked another question Ryland answered straight away. Maya didn't bother wondering what he was doing in the class.

Maya proceeded to take a few notes on apparation as she wasn't too sure how it worked.

Finally Professor Crown started to talk about brooms. When he asked his question Maya began to rack her brains, the main ones were obviously the Nimbus range and the Firebolt. Her mother had an older broom at home but she didn't know if it was still even being made. "The Silver Arrow sir," Maya replied unsure of her answer.

Grace was relieved when she found out that she was just going to find out the history today. The teacher proposed a question. Even though Grace detestes the thought of flying, she does know quite a few models.

"There is the Twigger 90 made by Flyte and Barker and the Moontrimmer which at the time broke records. Oh, and Jocunda Sykes used the Oakshaft 79 when she was TW first person to cross the Atlantic Ocean by broom." Grace really liked history and learning. As long as it was just notes and questions.

Darcy loved Quidditch, but she really wasn't the best when it came to brooms. However, she raised her hand and cleared her throat. "There's the Firebolt, which was used during the Quidditch world cup in 1994 by the Irish, and also the broom of Harry Potter. There's the Nimbus 2000 and Nimbus 2001, the Comet 260, and the Cleansweep broomsticks," she said softly, not sure if any of those brooms were independent, but said them nonetheless.

Deirdre was sitting quietly up to now, only being there to listen. She had been surprised when the class turned to be indoors, but eventually she shrugged it off and started taking in all the information Professor Crown, with the help of some students, was telling them.
When she heard the last question and several answers to it, she took a breath in and raised her hand," There is the Tinderblast, produced by Ellerby and Spudmore in 1940, Professor." She hoped this one would be considered 'independent'.

Horatio takes hold of his class, ushering the few, straining hands who haven't yet answered to calm and walks across to the middle of the room, subtly handing out his palm to each of the four students who gave him sufficient enough responses to his request, giving low-fives as he strolls back to the board, finally giving a twirl on the spot to rest his back against a suddenly blank board.
"So the girls are naturally owning the boys outright on this round. Should I be surprised? Five points each." He smirks, shrugging with his hands still behind his back.
"You clearly know your stuff, but here's a little more for your gigantic data banks, just to sum it up." Moving across to the right side of the board, he grabs the chalk out of the air effortlessly and scribbles like a man possessed.
"Way.. Way.. Way back to nine-hundred and sixty-two AD, three German warlocks divised the first prototype of a cheap, portable and easy-going transport by bewitching their broomsticks. It was easy to hide from muggles and it's main endeavour was to provide quick escape from friend and foe alike, providing a way out from people who found out about their magical nature. This was before the Floo guys, and for people apparating, which wasn't available for another three centuries!" The professor jots down the main points of his next section in history, explaining as he goes.

"But, if anyone's practised with a normal wooden broom, especially you lads out there, will realise it's one of the most ruddy uncomfortable rides out there.
An account by a Scottish wizard, Gutthrie Lochrim, proves this factor, maintaining a strong aversion after his flight from Montrose to Abroath, he had 'splinter-filled buttocks and bulging piles. Nice!
Anyway, fast-forward to the mid-nineteen-hundreds and we have the first mass-production attempts filtering through with the supply of enchantments that made comfort available to all who owned a broom. We have:

Black Forest's Ellerby & Spudmore; Tinberblast, 1940 (Later, Swiftstick, 1952, Firebolt 1993).
Ellas Grinstone; Oakshaft 79, 1979.
Gladys Boothby; Moontrimmer, 1901.
Leonard Jewke; Silver Arrow, 1920s and
Flyte and Barker; Twigger 90, 1990.

"All the leading independant sources of that time, plus, many more not mentioned there were unique and hand-tended to. Traded for other things like ingredients and clothes. My neighbour back then, even did it for rent.
Not one of these names however, breached a number greater than ten-thousand versions, which makes them all valuable, vintage pieces. They set to cash out on their elegance, which ultimately upturned the market as soon as speed and power were introduced."

Cleansweep Broom Company, Ollerton; One-Eleven, 1926-Present
Comet Company, Keitch and Horton; 140-290, 1929-Present

"This came about with the rivalry of two main competetors, Bill, Bob and Barnaby Ollerton with a lovely close-cutting handler that held corners with ease, taking up the audience against Randolph Keitch and Basil Horton, supplying a broom which featured a braking charm, renevating the playing field by not sending players off the pitch in spurts of great speed now introducted as commonly available to it's customers.
But of course, up to this day, a third company by the name of.."

Nimbus Racing Broom Company, Whitehorn; 1000-2001, 1967-Present

"The Nimbus have been dominating the field with their knowledge of embracing the past and absorbing what history in the making up till now, of broomsticks, has shaped the future. They took the eccentrics of the Silver Arrow and literally pumped it full of enchantments until it nearly burst from it's wood's bindings, creating a moster that could reach over one-hundred miles per hour and do a full circle spin on the spot; a huge accomplishment for a young company in recent years."

Horatio nods to himself, feeling as if he's won a few points for remembering all of that crammed up in the attic somewhere, and points to the back with his wand, revealing from a small cloaking spell, a drape that covered a rack with about twenty or so brooms standing upright.

"Everyone grab one and shuffle out your desks a bit; remove the ones that aren't being used. We'll practise some of the easiest and most required charms that brooms require to function as a half-decent transport method."

Even though he was barely paying attention to the lecture, Kynan was surprised at the notes that were appearing in front of him. His mind was sleepy but his ears and hands were working hard. He could hear the Professor's words, but his brain barely registered them. All he understood were a few names of broomsticks, 'German' and 'company'.

When Professor Crown revealed from the back, Kynan wondered what they were going to do. Surely the classroom was too small for flying? Still, he followed the Professor's orders- he shuffled out his desk and then looked around, wondering what they were now going to do.

Maya held out her hand, shocked, when Professor Crown hit her hand for a high five. He was really cool, Maya thought smiling to herself, deciding that she liked him. His enthusiasm for the subject also made it hard not to like it. She wasn't looking forward to spending her first flying lesson in a hot, stuffy room, but so far it wasn't too bad and she had actually surprised herself with the knowledge she had stored away.

She laughed at his comment of the girls knowing more than the boys, it was true though. She looked around at the boys and noticed that they didn't seem too interested, she thought that guys liked quidditch, shrugging to herself she turned back around to Professor Crown as he was animatedly going through the history of brooms. He impressively went through each broom, giving the background knowledge of each. Maya sat there, her mouth hanging slightly open, gaping at the professor, wondering if anyone was taking in what he was saying as he was talking at a very fast pace.

Still overwhelmed and rendered dumbstruck by Professor Crown's long speech, it was a while before she gathered her thoughts and grabbed a broom. She looked down at it, unimpressed. The twigs at the end were bent at odd angles and she could feel it vibrating under her touch. Worried at how the broom would hold up as it appeared significantly inadequate, she returned to her desk and pushed it to one side.

Excited at the thought of finally being able to fly and show off her skills she impatiently waited for everyone else to ready themselves.

Deirdre was pleasantly surprised when the Professor 'low'-fived her for the accurate answer she'd given, and then smiled at his comment about girls owning the boys. True that, she thought to herself. After giving the girls their points, the teacher had started yet another lecture, which she wasn't really paying the greatest attention to. However, she did hear most of it.

After he finished talking, Prof. Crown revealed a rack with broomsticks and gave the class his orders to ' shuffle a bit their desks'. Deirdre was first unsure of what she was supposed to do, but then decided to follow his words and do as she was told. She wondered what they was going to do of it afterwards.

Grace sees Prof. Crown reaching out for a low-five, so Grace reaches over and accepts it. He was really cool, and he might actually get Grace through flying lessons. Five points, Grace was happy with that. Grace smiled when he said that girls were owning the boys, because it was true.

He started explaining the history of flying. Grace was fine with that. She grabbed her book and started noting down the keypoints of what he was saying. Then Prof. Crown asked for everyone to grab a broom and make some space. This wasn't good for grace. She was confused though, they were going to do it inside? She didn't question though.

Grace shuffled her desk over and moved the desk next to her over as it wasn't being used. Grace then walked over and grabbed a broom. It was actually quite light, despite how heavy it looked. Grace moved over to where her desk used to be. She now waited for the next instructions.

Darcy was positively surprised by the happy aura of the professor they had. She low-fived him when he walked past them, glad to have received some points for her house and answered somewhat correctly. She was amazed at the professor's knowledge, but at the same time, she thought that it was necessary to know as much of brooms as he did when he was a professor in it.

She looked at the brooms he presented and quickly went to fetch one, wondering what kind of spells they would be taught. Maybe how to balance a broom well, or how to make it fly and stuff. She smiled. She really loved Quidditch, so everything she got to learn was something she was overly happy about.

Evan was slightly upset by the fact that he had to move some desks. But no task could lower his spirit now, when he was going to get a broomstick. A real magical one, with enchantments, and able to fly. As a muggle-born, Evan didn't like to hold a broom before, because it always involved cleaning, and never flying. Now, however, his attitude towards brooms was quite opposite.

Standing by the rack, Evan was choosing a broomstick. This one looks better, twigs are put together tighter. On the other hand, its head is askew. Hm. Evan knew nothing about broomsticks and how to choose one. And, in this case, it didn't really matter which one he choose, they all were the same.

A minute later, however, Evan picked one and was ready to discover some more things about broom flights. We've got broomsticks, but there's a lack of space for flying. What is it going to be? Summoning a broom into our hands in some way or another? Probably. I would even bet on it, I think. Evan heard about commanding a broomstick but had no idea what it is look like. And he was looking forward to discover it, if it was really their next task.

Cassandra rolled her eyes. The professor was being over enthusiastic and unprofessional, and she wondered if all her other classes would be similar to this. Sliding her desk across the floor into the corner and pushing away another nearby desk, she walked over to the rack of broomsticks to take a look. As many of the students had already concluded, these were obviously beginner broomsticks, and she knew that they would be practically the same. Nonetheless, she chose one of the best-looking ones, with almost no scratches, neat twigs, and a straight handle stick thing. At this thought, Cassandra rolled her eyes. Really, Flying Lessons should be optional, or in the least simply a recommended core class, not a mandatory one. However, unfortunately, it was not her place to decide what classes had to be taken or not.

Grasping the stick of the broom tightly in her left hand, she made her way back to her desk stuck far in the corner, weaving and ducking in and out of the other students, one of which from momentary glance appeared to be swinging a broomstick over his or her head. Cassandra understood that they'd probably be floating or practising mounting their brooms, so she stood a little ways away from her desk with her broom sticks down held loosely in her left hand.

Giving a minute or so for all of the class to fan out and gather their own amount of space, his brow lightly furrowed at one person attempting to mount their broom nearer the back of the class.
"Everyone listening?" He spoke up in a clear tone, making sure that even the back stopped their rampant twitching of supposed flying today. "If anyone was actually hearing me before you went to gather your appropriate equipment..." A quick shout of "Accio Broom!", and a simple twig-embedded-stick flew across the classroom into his grasp, "You would've noticed that I said we'd be practising charms that allow these lengths of wood the ability to fly. Because they're just brooms, not broom-sticks." He nods, checking out the fill of the students present, then turning to yank the black board down, rolling the material so that he was faced with a new surface to write upon, and did so;

A-res-to Mo-ment-um; Basic Cushioning Charm.

"If you would notice, the weight of your brooms are extremely light compared to that of a normal flight broom. This is genrally because a lot of the spells that are applied to modern transports are invisable weights. For example, the cushioning charm we will be practising first off, fastens a pillowy object to the seat of your one-person vehicle, letting you fly with the greatest of comforts."
He places his own basic stick upon his desk, standing with a quick motion spell to hold it up-right, and draws down the neck to the brush with his wand.

"You have to make sure that your wand trails all the way down to the end of the broom to the hilt of the brush, also saying the charm as you perform this. If it falls off and hits your desk by slippage or distraction, you will have to try again. Once you find you've completed it, the sensation of walking through jelly will be experienced for a brief second." With the pupils in his room, he practises the words with them once before chanting the correct charm upon the stick, his clothes and hair physically pushing themselves backwards, as if rushes of air were flying against him, then falliing back to normality.
"Then, test it out. The only way I can describe a successful charm is like sitting on a plush horse's saddle. With age however, comes wear and tear, which is why new brooms are purchased after older ones become useless. New charms cannot be added or refreshed, like muggle furniture: You have to buy a new one." He sits upon his stick, shuffling a little until comfortable and coming back off.

"All start trying it out now, we've got another few to go through after this, then we'll see how they go, and I'll deal out homework afterwards." Taking his example broom around with him, just in case others would like to see the difference in how theirs compares to his own, Professor Crown wanders around to the assistance to others who require it.

When Maya was comfortable in the space she had chosen, she looked around at the other students as they spread out from one another. Returning her gaze towards Professor Crown when he began to speak, Maya listened attentively. Maya raised her eyebrows, what was the difference between brooms and broom sticks? She glanced down at the broom she was gripping in her hand, but before she could ponder this thought anymore Professor Crown had pulled down the blackboard loudly.

Practicing the spell out loud with the rest of the class, Maya gripped her wand tightly, preparing herself physically and mentally to preform the spell.

Maya watched aptly as Professor Crown demonstrated the spell on his own broom, making sure to memorise the pronunciation of the spell. Mirroring the professors movement Maya did the same to her broom, hoping it would have the same effect, as she clearly and confidently said "Aresto Momentum." Feeling a weird sensation through her body, Maya quickly shook off the feeling and gripped her broom tightly. Confident that the spell had worked.

Maya glanced around the classroom gauging how well the other students were doing. Returning to her own work she decided now would be a good time to test out how well her spell had worked. Sitting upon the broomstick, she felt quite comfortable. Clambering off of it, a smile spread across her face as she felt that she had preformed the spell successfully.

Deirdre watched as the Professor demonstrated the action they were supposed to perform on the brooms they'd chosen before. She took in the information he'd given them and gripped her wand tightly, not wanting to take the risk of making a mistake and fail.

"Aresto Momentum." she whispered to the broom. She felt a pulse, aside from her own, running trough her body, and knew she must've done right with it. She smiled proudly with her success, occurring up to now. She sat on her broomstick to test it, confident now she'd done fine.

In his own world, he watched the pupils all in all, successfully enchant their sticks to bear fair weight and cushion their rear upon many an uncomfortable journey. He quickly does his, adding a few words for complexity with additional wand movements up the shaft and ending inside the bristles of the brush; this would add fluidicty to his broom's comfort, like comparing a sofa throw to a bicycle seat.

"I see most of you have got that sussed, if you haven't, ask a friend to do yours, and you will have to practise it along with your homework I am about to give you." He says, glancing at the time and seeing that he only has the last five minutes for the end of his short Flying lesson.
"Two more enchantments I ask you to have upon your project brooms by the end of the next week." He calls over the surrounding hum of quiet moaning, because really, who wants homework? He holds a finger to his mouth as scrawled set of letters start to write their-selves underneath the first spell:

A-res-to Mo-ment-um; Basic Cushioning Charm.

Com-plec-ta Ma-u-nus; Basic Gripping Charm. (See p124)

Con-fu-to Ho-die; Basic Braking Charm. (See p126)
     (oo)        (ee)

"The brackets underneath the Braking charm are the pronounciations of the enchantment; perhaps now you can sympathise with how long and how exceedingly complex these charms can get for a broom, and for why it's taken so long to get where we are now with them, far from perfected of course." The professor explains, taking out a box of linen lengths of scrap use, each one a differing pattern from stripes and polka dots, to giraffes and candy canes, walking into the fray of desks and allowing each pupil to pick from the abundance of material he has.
"Lesson's basically finished here folks, but I want to see all of the spells behind me and a ribbon of your choice, wrapped around your work to show that it's yours, because people, this is your final piece to hand in to me at the end of the year." He announces above shocked faces, all eyeing their sticks with a sort of scared shyness. "But don't panic, because if you can apply the charms as you just did there in under minutes, you won't have a problem riding it through an assault course by the end of this year." He grins, containing his glee at seeing what his students could produce.

"Oh, and if you fancy decorating your transport further with wild colours and patterns of sort, feel free. Might add a few extra points or even marks to your work... They have to be spell-made however, I'm not having water-acrylics all over fine wood." The taller form in the classroom smirks, satisfied with what he's handed out and letting the rest scribble down what they have to learn and folding pages for future reference in their books. "Class dismissed bairns. Take your time before leaving to make sure you've got everything. Again, any questions, I'm normally in my office." He calls over people scrambling to either take their time to the next event they have to attend or chatting amongst their friends.
