| The game had been – well, interesting. In several senses of the word. On one hand, the beginning of the match had Slytherin and Ravenclaw neck and neck. On the other, Ari’s drunken commentary was always straddling a fine line between frustrating and hilarious. But, by an hour in, both seemed to die down a bit. Ari was either getting more sober, or getting more tired, and Ravenclaw was finally pulling ahead, to Matthew’s disappointment. Then, Slytherin’s keeper got injured, and suddenly the game was so weighted in Ravenclaw’s favor that it wasn’t really worth watching anymore. For a while now, Matthew had been talking to Arwen and hardly paying attention to the game. And to be honest, he’d almost forgotten that Ari was there, she was so quiet. He was just starting to think that maybe she’d fallen asleep or died, when suddenly, she sprung up from her seat claiming to be sick, and took off toward the exit. Matthew jumped at the sudden movement, and stared after her for a moment before reacting. ”I better just take her back,” he said reluctantly to Arwen, watching as Ari stumbled over the bleachers. Though, she recovered somewhat clumsily on her own, which meant she was far more balanced than she was at the beginning of the game. Which was good. ”Who knows where she’ll end up otherwise.”
He was avoiding her, but that didn’t mean Matthew wanted her to end up passing out in the forbidden forest and getting mauled by a werewolf or something. So, after saying goodbye to Arwen, he turned and went after her. He’d lost sight of her, but he made his way out of the pitch, positive that she’d probably go in that direction. And he was right – as he stepped out onto the grassy lawn, his eyes caught the red of her hair and he went in that direction. Ari was kneeling in front of one of the many bushes – Matthew had no idea if she’d actually thrown up or not. Probably, based on how drunk she seemed before. But as he neared her, Matthew came to a halt a bit away. He really didn’t know how drunk she was now, and that wasn’t good. Because at least when she was obnoxiously drunk he was fairly comfortable being around her. Because it was almost like it didn’t count. But now, he lingered in place – it wasn’t like she was going anywhere anyway. If she did, he’d go after her.
Matthew knew there was a part of him that was afraid to go near her. He’d never realized how much of a coward he was before. But he couldn’t just stand there watching her all night – what if she never got up? What if she fell asleep there. So, more cautiously than ever, Matthew approached her. ”Ari,” he said uncertainly, reaching her. She looked a bit pitiful on the ground, and he pushed the guilt that she’d claimed it to be his fault from his mind like he’d been doing through most of the game. ”Ari, come on. I’ll take you back to the castle.” Reaching down, he hooked an arm through hers, helping her up. She wobbled, and he had to brace himself to take some of her weight, but it was way easier than getting her up the bleachers early on. ”Just don’t throw up on me, okay?” Because, despite all the awkwardness and guilt and everything, that was a very real concern, and wasn’t something Matthew wanted to have to worry about.

| After a while, Ari had gotten bored of being in Matthew and Arwen's presence. No offense to them, but the game seemed more interesting than Arwen's broken cat. In all her years at Hogwarts, she was never interested in Quidditch. But now that she was a little bit out of her mindset, it seemed more interesting. She loved watching the team fly around, and her head was moving with them, which made her dizzy. After a while, Matthew decided that they should go on an adventure! Adventures where fun! They meant pirates and fairies and unicorns! Ari skipped along side him, sometimes getting away from him, and it seemed like a fun game. But then she remembered how terrible she felt at the game, but for some reason, now that she had left, she felt ten times more better.
Her headache was still there, and she still felt sick, but she wasn't quiet as humiliated as she was back at the game in front of everyone. She guessed that Matthew finally got the hint about wanting to go back. She knew she wouldn't be able to make it back to the common room by herself, let alone maybe even the castle. She felt so sick she would probably just sit there and die in the forest. And she hoped Matthew wouldn't be so mad at her and leave her there to die. She hoped he would look for her. But as she vomited on their way up to the castle, she threw her arm around him, completely forgetting what she had told him before. And again, she felt that safeness she felt at the dance, and everything seemed right, even if she wasn't in her right state of mind.
But suddenly, she got really tired, and everything was a blur again. She couldn't control what went out of her mouth, and her mind was a complete fog. She looked at him and said, "I like it like this." Yes, she was still a little drunk, but she figured, hell, she had already told him the worst possible thing that she could've told him. Why not tell him everything else? The worst that could happen is that he could disappear forever, and she could go silent for another 20 years. And that's just the worst.

| The Quidditch match had been far more interesting than Matthew had expected - and not because of the game itself. It had been enlightening, in the same way as discovering something that you didn't really want to know in the first place. Like, when you found out that Darth Vader was Luke's father - enlightening, but confusing, all at the same time. Yet still, somehow, it made so much sense - filling in the gaps that you hadn't even realized were there. That was kind of what it was like, hearing Arwen point out how he'd been wrong to run away - how Ari obviously felt about him. Hearing Ari say it herself. Somehow, despite all of the things running through his mind between the dance and now, Matthew hadn't really considered Ari's point of view until today. He'd been so focused on pushing her out, on pushing his feelings for her out, that he hadn't really stopped to see the whole picture. He supposed he'd imagined that Ari had been in the same boat as him - caught in the moment, before realizing it was a mistake. He'd been afraid to face her - afraid of what she'd think of him after what he'd almost done. When really, he should've been afraid of what she'd think of him after what he hadn't done.
And though he wasn't exactly sure why, knowing that Ari had feelings, those kind of feelings, for him - well, it changed everything. Or, at least, it straightened out a lot of things in his head, despite the fact that he wasn't really sure how to react to it. In some ways, it was good to not have to guess. In others, it was terrible, because Matthew had no idea how Ari would interpret anything he did. Especially now, as felt her throw an arm around him to steady herself after vomiting profusely in the grass. But the good thing about the whole situation was that Matthew didn't have that much time to think about it, because he had to get Ari back to the common room before she died. So he slid his arm around the small of her back to support her and pulled her along toward the castle, a little surprised by the way he felt almost protective of her. But could Ari just let it go? No. Because she had to point out that she liked it like this. And Matthew really didn't know what to say back. "You like it like what?" he asked, trying to diffuse the awkwardness on his part by letting a bit of sarcasm linger in his tone. "You mean, the throwing up in bushes part? Or the not being able to walk a straight line without falling over part?" Matthew didn't like either, but he had a feeling now wasn't the best time to say so.
"Come on, just relax," Matthew said, leaning down to talk in her ear. "We're already almost back to the castle." because it wasn't a very far walk, despite how difficult Ari was making it, and before long they were at the front doors. "Just don't be loud, you've made it this far, you don't want to get caught now," he said as he pushed them open, pulling Ari along with him. And somehow, miraculously, they managed to make it back to the common room without getting caught. When they got inside, he let out a sigh of relief. There were a few losers who hadn't gone to the game milling about, giving Ari skeptical looks, and Matthew glared at them, marching her past them toward the staircases to the dormitories. "Alright, are you okay now?" Matthew asked, though his arm lingered around her waist - only to keep her balanced, obviously. What other reason would he have? "I can't take you up the stairs, I'm not able to get up." Because of the stupid spell that had been placed on the girl's stairs. Boys couldn't go up them. "Just get some sleep, okay? It'll help."
Well, that wasn't really true. Ari would definitely not feel any better in the morning. Matthew didn't know from experience, but if the movies were right, he was sure of it. Though he didn't really feel right letting her go, Matthew retracted his arm from around her, hesitating for a second before turning to head up his own staircase.

| Ari wasn't sure about anything anymore. Why had her life turned into one big confusing jigsaw puzzle that never seemed to end? It was like completing the puzzle and then realizing five pieces where missing. She didn't understand why everything had to be that complicated. And now she was regretting everything. Regretting every moment she had ever shared with Matthew, particularly today and the dance. She wished she could take it all back and would have decided to not go to it. She wished Matthew had pushed her away harder. She wished that she wasn't the type who clinged onto something they wanted so hard, but she couldn't help it. She has tired of people leaving her and the fact that her best friend had thought to do such a thing, broke her. But at the same time she was drawn to him. They where magnets. No matter how hard he had tried to stay away from her and crush her, she felt herself drawn to him.
She wasn't even mad at him that he had tried to leave like everyone else. Now she had just accepted that she has feelings for him, and in her drunken state, she had told him. She hoped he would think naively about it, and not even catch on to what she was saying, but by the obvious shock on his face, it seemed like he caught on and boy was she freaking out internally. But when she snaked her arm over his shoulder, and told him that she liked it, he was being a smart ass. She looked at him and said, "It's all your fault. YOUR FAULT I LIKE YOU, YOUR FAULT I'M IN THIS MESS, YOUR FAULT, YOUR FAULT YOUR FAULT." She threw a tantrum. And then she felt like a child. She had now told him she liked him three different times. She was embarrassed. She was humiliated. People where starring.
He tried to get her to go to the girls dorm. She was good at rebelling. She should rebel this shit. She sat down and said, "No. Not going." She looked at him. She then started swaying a little bit, and getting dizzy. But she did want her bed. She looked at him again. Then towards the stairs. Then at him. She sighed and said, "Fine." She tried standing, but then couldn't. She fell back on her butt and looked at Matthew helplessly and said, "I can't." Which was partway true. Part of her wanted to see what he would do if she wouldn't move. Would he leave her there like before? This was the test beyond all tests. If he left, she would be done.

| Okay, apparently trying to diffuse the tension via sarcasm was a terrible idea. Instead of the subject being brushed off, Ari started shouting about it. Shouting at him about it. About how it was his fault. Matthew felt his face redden as the words escaped her mouth. It was his fault that she liked him... She liked him. Hearing Ari say it out loud, so directly to him, made him more uncomfortable than ever. But he'd be lying if he said that there wasn't some small part of him that liked hearing it. Still, he had no idea how to respond. Going for sarcasm again was probably a bad idea, and replying about anything even remotely related also seemed like all bad idea. So, in the end, Matthew went with the most neutral response he could come up with. "Shhhh," Matthew said, looking down at her sharply. "Really, do you want to get caught?" Matthew asked. Because if she didn't stop screaming, she would. People were already starting to stare, and Matthew glared at them again. "Piss off," he muttered in their direction.
At least, if nothing else, this night was finally over. Ari would go up to her dorm, and Matthew would go up to his, and that would be that. OR Ari could sit down on the floor and refuse to move. Why had he forgotten to consider that option? "What are you doing?" Matthew asked dryly, crossing his arms. "Ari, come on, get up. People are looking at you." Not that Matthew wouldn't stare too, if he were in any other position. After a few moments, Ari seemed to give in and tried to get up - And failed miserably. And it quickly became obvious that Ari wasn't lying. She seriously, somehow, didn't seem to be able to get up. For a moment Matthew just watched her. "Well, that's what you get for sitting down in the first place.". Matthew watched her try for a moment more, but it didn't take long at all for him to step in and help her. Mostly because people were starting to laugh at her, and that irritated Matthew more than it should have. Not entirely sure what to do with her, Matthew reached for her hand and pulled her up.
Ari swayed on the spot, and between that and how hard a time she's had getting up, Matthew quickly deduced that Ari had no hope of making it to bed on her own. Which really only left him with one choice. "Alright, well I can't take you up there, so youll just have to come with - um, come stay in my dorm." Making it up the steps wasn't exactly easy, and Matthew put an arm around Ari's shoulders to help her not fall over. Finally, after what felt like forever, they reached Matthew's dorm, and he dragged Ari inside. "Don't fall over," he said, releasing her hand and going straight to his dresser and emerging with a pair of sweatpants and a plain black tee shirt. "Here," Matthew said, shoving the clothes into her hands. "The bathroom is over there. I think there's a new toothbrush under the sink. Don't pass out in there." Though, the night might be easier if she did. As soon as the bathroom door closed behind her, Matthew climbed onto his bed, leaning back against the wall, and dropped his head in his hands, the awkwardness of the situation finally hitting him. Ari was drunk. She was in his bathroom. He was letting her slee in his bedroom. What the fuck was he doing?

| And he helped her. He actually helped her. She had been so rude and mean towards him, she wouldn't blame him if he had left her there to be laughed at and humiliated. She went to her safe place again. Matthew's arms. She got that fuzzy warm butterfly feeling in her stomach and for a minute she wasn't sure if she was going to throw up or not. But when she didn't she was glad. Since he couldn't go up to her dorm, they had no choice but to go up to his. A place Ari had never been before. Ari loved going into new places. New places meant adventure. And adventure was fun. She looked around the room when they got up the stairs. It was a struggle, but she made it and that was success for her! He quickly gave her a pair of his pajamas which she looked at awkwardly and was shoved in the bathroom to change.
Everything had happened so fast. She looked at her reflection in the mirror and noticed how terrible she looked. Her face was pale, her eyes drawn and tired looking, and her hair a wild mess. She hastily put the shirt and pants on unsure of what the future events would unfold. She knew Matthew was a perfect gentleman and she was lucky in this case. Any other guy their age would try and take advantage of her, but she knew that Matthew wasn't ready for that yet. She actually managed to brush her teeth, fix her hair. She suddenly was very tired. She walked out of the bathroom, her now bare feet hitting the cold tile and then she jumped when they hit the warm carpet. It was like she forgot how to function when she was drunk and she didn't like it all. She was positive she wouldn't do it again for a long time.
She tiredly looked at Matthew and went over and laid next to him on his bed. She snaked her arm around his torso, and used his chest as a pillow. The day might've been one jacked up puzzle, but now she seemed to be finding the pieces one by one. Her eye lids started to close but she wanted to say one last thing to him before she blacked out. She repeated, "You're my best friend." And this time the words weren't sarcastic, they were one hundred percent genuine. He had taken care of her in her time of need when she had messed up, and that was more than she could've asked for.

| As Matthew handed Ari the clothes, he got a good look at her face for the first time that night – and truthfully, he was pretty sure he’d never seen anyone look more tired and sick in his life. He’d wanted to try firewhiskey desperately, but if this was what it did to you, Matthew suddenly wasn’t so sure anymore. Ari really looked like she could just drop dead at any moment. But when she returned, she did look a bit better at least – in the sense that her hair was a bit tamer, and her clothes didn’t have any vomit on them. ”Feel any better?” It was really strange to see her wearing his clothes, actually. Matthew was relatively skinny, but he was tall, and his tee shirt fell to the middle of Ari’s legs. But after a moment, he got over it – he had to, because Ari had somehow managed to make this whole situation even harder on Matthew by literally crawling into his bed with him.
Despite knowing that Ari was still drunk and probably still sick, and definitely couldn’t have anything sketchy on her mind, Matthew still felt his neck heat up a bit. But it was fine, he’d just move. He really didn’t think he could sleep after all this anyway. But before Matthew could roll off of his side of the bed and reclaim his personal space, Ari claimed it entirely for herself. Matthew felt himself freeze as her arms wrapped around him, her head falling onto his chest so nonchalantly as though it had happened hundreds of times before. His breath caught in his chest for a moment as he fought against that ridiculous feeling in the pit of his stomach. But when Ari spoke again, her voice distracted him, and he looked down at her. Despite the fact that drunk Ari’s vocabulary seemed to be limited to a grand total of three sentences, Matthew felt the corner of his mouth turn up a bit. She seemed exhausted – was maybe already asleep.
”Yeah,” he whispered back to her, though she might not hear it or remember it, and for the first time since the ball, Matthew sighed and stopped fighting against it. ”Just get some sleep,” he said, his arms – almost too naturally – sliding around her shoulders and tightening. And all at once, he became all too aware of all of the places their skin was touching. Which was nearly everywhere, because Ari had curled into him like a cat, pressing into his side. And Matthew stared down at her again, intrigued by the way that after the initial shock of it, it didn’t feel the slightest bit strange. As Ari’s breathing slowed, Matthew was sure that he’d be able to slip out of her grasp without her noticing. But, at that moment, he realized that even though he could, he wouldn’t. ”Don’t worry, I’ll be here.” Because, though he still may never admit it when Ari was sober, or awake – Matthew liked it like this, too.
