Homework was officially the only thing that Katherine had done so far that year. Other than classes, of course. When she wasn't doing her homework in the common room, she was in the library where she was almost always able to get some peace and quiet. She did enjoy it, the workload, but the problem was that it wasn't exactly heavy. She was only a first year, so she almost always had some kind of spare time. And that was the problem. She was too young to play Quidditch, and few of the other activities she had heard about interested her.

That was why she had decided that she needed a change of scenery. She had been down to the lake before, of course, but only for a few minutes. But the day was less overcast than was usual, and she figured that some sun would probably do her some good. A change of scenery was one thing, but a change of activity was another, and although for a fleeting moment she had considered going for a swim or something, she ended but deciding that reading one of the novels her mother had sent her would be a better choice.

Sitting down against a tree, a short distance from the bank of the lake, Kathrine opened the book and started to read. It was a good book so far, but it wasn't necessarily one if her favourites. After about half an hour of reading, she heard footsteps nearby and looked up, offering the person a polite smile before returning her focus to the book.

Carmen had decided to go and do some exploring around the school. So she could be more familiar with this place and won't get here lost so easily. Being transfer student in second year makes you feel like first year student once again. Today she wanted to explore Grounds. She just walked here around.

When she was near lake she saw there one girl there reading. When girl smiled to her she did smile back. She thought for awhile if she should go and talk with the girl. If she wanted to have new friends here then she should go and talk to here. Girl seemed to be around her age actually, well year or two younger. She did take a deep breath and more closer to the girl.

"Hello," she said to her with a small smile on face. "I'm sorry to disturb you with your reading," she added there. She wasn't sure what else to say next. "I'm Carmen," she decided introduce herself. Actually her first name was Carmenita but she always says Carmen, her nickname, when someone ask hrr name or when she introduces herself.

Kathrine could tell that the girl was hesitating, and although she considered just speaking to her to save her the effort, she instead remained fixated on the book. If the girl was shy, but wanted to say something, then it wasn’t going to help her if Kathrine started the conversation for her. When the girl did speak, Kathrine closed her book, leaving a finger between the pages. Looking up, she smiled again and said, “hello Carmen. It’s no problem. There is always time to read later.

Glancing around, she noticed that the area around the lake wasn’t particularly busy, which was rather unexpected. She’d thought that almost all of the students spent their time outside. There were a few people, of course, but they were not very close to her and Carmen. Looking back at the girl, she couldn’t decide whether she was supposed to stand up or not. She quite enjoyed sitting on the ground, surprisingly. Deciding that she would stay seated, she offered another smile to the other girl and asked, “would you like to sit down? It’s pretty comfortable down here, honestly.” She hoped that the girl would join her, if she was honest with herself. She didn’t exactly reach out to people enough to make any friends, but someone as company for a while could be fun. "Oh!" she added, remembering her manners, "I'm Kathrine, by the way."

Carmen smiled at the girl when she can basically read in some other time. She was glad that girl didn't get mad at her because she came over to her and talked. Some people have gotten mad when she disturbs them. She herself have gotten mad or at least said something what she regrets now when someone did disturb her. "Yeah there is," she agreed with it.

She did notice too that there wasn't that many people around right now. She didn't really mind it, she liked more quiet place than very crowded and loud places. She never have really. She is used to be girl who most of times reads somewhere in corner but well sometimes hangs out with friends too. She is just a girl who well is smart and brave sometime. It's for some people weird and also so many thing that because she is blonde she is supposed to be dumb and naive girl but she isn't. Anyways she looked back at girl now and nodded her head. "Sitting for awhile doesn't seem so bad idea," she said there with a smile and did take a seat next to the girl. "Oh it's nice to meet you Kathrine."

Kathrine was always finding time to read, often in her bed before she went to sleep and throughout the day when she wasn’t busy with classes. So it wasn’t a problem at all to put down the book for a few minutes of company. The other girl didn’t seem like she was very used to Hogwarts, but there were a number of reasons why that could be and Kathrine didn’t want to try and speculate. “It’s nice to meet you as well,” Kathrine said, smiling again. She was sure that you were supposed to smile when you were talking to someone that you didn’t dislike, so she figured that was the best thing to try. She knew that she felt more comfortable when Carmen smiled, so perhaps it was the same for the other girl.

What year are you in?” Kathrine asked, trying to make conversation. She knew that the blonde wasn’t a first year, as she didn’t recall her at the sorting. But she didn’t remember briefly catching a glimpse of her at the Ravenclaw table in the Great Hall when her nose wasn’t buried in a book, so she figured that they must share the same house. “Have you been enjoying the year so far?

Carmen did read so much as she could in her free time actually too. So she knew that there is time to read always in some other time. She had always been more into books than making friends for sure. But she have decided to changes it now. She smiled at the girl once again and nodded her head there. She really wasn't that good making friends too actually.

"Well I'm second year but I did transfer from Drumstrang school so it's for me like first year here," she said replied back to her. She actually did miss the sorting ceremony so she had no idea who were here first years and so on. "I think your first year student right?" she from her then. She just assumed since she was younger than her. "So far it's been good here. Even if getting used to this castle takes some time. I always tend to get lost here," she said there with a small smile. "What about you?" she asked back even. She really was curious what others did think about this school sometimes.

Kathrine raised an eyebrow when the other girl told her than she had transferred from Durmstrang. She had been set to attend Durmstrang until the year before, when her family relocated. She hadn’t been happy with the idea at first, but she quickly decided she was better off focusing on her new life in the United Kingdom rather than dwelling on what could have been at Durmstrang. Part of her was a little jealous, though, that Carmen had been able to at least do there for a year. “Yes,” she said, “I’m a first year. I moved here from Denmark last year. I was going to go to Durmstrang.

The brunette thought about how the weather at Hogwarts was pretty decent compared to her home, and how that had taken her a while to get used to. But she had to admit that she’d grown to like the sun that sometimes decided to show itself from behind the clouds, as it had today. “I’ve enjoyed it,” Kathrine replied, “I’m glad that I started this year, with the other people my age. It must have been odd for you, being amongst a group who already knew each other from last year.

She didn't really want to come here but her parents decided it would be good if she attended here instead of Durmstrang suddenly. She wasn't sure where this idea came from but they made her to come here. So here she was. She at first didn't really like it here since it was so much different from Durmstrang and she had no friends here. It was pretty hard to feel like first year in your second year again but now she have gotten used with it slowly. "Oh I see. I'm from Norway. Well my parents still live there but they made me come this school, not sure why but they did it," she said there and did sigh at the end.

She have gotten used with England weather now too already even if at first it was bit different from Norway but she didn't really mind it. Well changes for awhile is good and in some point you get used with them also even if it seems at first impossible thing. "Well it is. Still is. Also my English isn't that fluent one. It's my erm fourth language basically. Since Norwegian is my first, then comes Icelandic and then Spanish. So yeah English is fourth. It's hard to make friends when you barely know here anyone and they all have already their friends and groups," she said there once again with sigh at the end. She really haven't made many friends. She also heard that one of her friends did transfer from Durmstrang here too but she haven't really seen her around yet. Not sure why.

Kathrine nodded, thinking of how it was a coincidence that someone in a similar position to her was the first person she would have a real conversation with at Hogwarts. She was sure that it would make talking to the girl a little easier, since they both knew what it was like to be so far away from their homes. “It seems like a decent school,” Kathrine said, “not that I have anything to compare it to, of course. Do you wish you could go back to Durmstrang?” Maybe she could hear about her once dream school from this blonde girl who seemed to be pretty nice.

When Carmen mentioned the languages that she knew, and that English was her fourth, Kathrine nodded in understanding. Though, English had been her second language- Danish being her first- she also knew German and had a passable understanding of the Scandinavian languages, though she was far from fluent in those. She and her parents had travelled fairly often, and they were Denmark’s closest neighbours. “Your English sounds pretty good to me,” Kathrine offered with a smile, and she was being honest. She could definitely understand what Carmen was saying when she spoke, so that was a good sign. “I’m sure you’ll make more friends the longer you’re here,” she said, “I’m hoping I will.” Though her problem had not been with other people, but with herself. Though, now she thought about it, her peers may not be very interested in talking to her either. She wouldn’t know.

Carmen smiled there and then nodded her head. She of course agreed witg Katherine thar school was decent one and also that she wanted to go back to Durmstrang if she could. "Yeah this school looks decent one yeah," she said therr woth a small smile on her face. "Of course I would like to go back to Durmstrang if I could," she said and did sigh now there. She missed her old school actually still. It was so much different than this one here. She knew that her patents won't never agree that she goes back to Durm, they think studying in Hogwarts would be more useful to her.

Well she knew that she didn't really pronouncr all worda correctly sometimes but she atleast tryed. She was better than even some english people. She found it weird actually even. "Yeah, I had good teacher who did help me a lot with spelling and also with writting in it," she said therr with a smile now. She really liked to speak in english so she did speak in it when ever she could. She smiled there and nodded her head again. "Well I hope so too," she said with a smile on her facr and she really dif. Having friends can be fun even if reading book is fun but everyone need in times someone with who they can talk.

Kathrine had figured as much. Although she didn't mind not going to Durmstrang now as much as she had when she first found out about her family's planned move, she could understand that Carmen would still want to return. She had actually gone to the school, and had been through the adjustments of first year there, only to have to do it all again, alone, at a new school. "What was it like there?" she asked chewing her lip in though, her curiosity increasing when she realised she would be able find out some things about the school from someone closer to her age than her parents.

"I like English, though," she said, "it's pretty complicated, and I've embarrassmed myself a few times because I've understood something wrong, but it's a good language to know." Kathrine thought that Carmen shouldn't have too much of a problem making friends, since she seemed fairly nice. "Maybe we could be friends?" she asked, thinking that she sounded stupid even as she said it. But she didn't care, because if she could make at least one friend it would be an accomplishment. "So.." she started, trying to think of a topic to talk about, before settling on somethinh simple, "What did you do during the summer?"

Carmen smiled and thought how to reply to Katherine's question now. She just wasn't sure what kind of words to use. "Well it was nice there. It's so much different than here. Durmstrang isn't in castle like Hogwarts, it was ship you could say. And Durmstrang had just two houses but here is four," she said then there something with a small smile on her face. She managed to say something about the her old school what she did really miss now.

"Well it's not easy yeah," she agreed. "Well same here actually. I just know the basics when people say very complicated word I don't always get what it means. I can seem to be good at it but still I don't get always everything," she said there now. When other girl asked if she could be her friend then she did smile. "Of course you can be friend," she said even out, so the other girl could understand her. "What I did during my summer.. hmm... I did spend it with my few muggle friends, did learn bit more English, did pack my stuff to come here, did shopping and spent time with my family," she said there now and smiled. Even if she missed her parents and muggle friends at the moment. But she didn't wanna cry because of it right now. "What you did during your summer?" she asked back too.

Kathrine listened to the girl talk about Durmstrang, and although she had already known about some of the things that Carmen was talking about, she still found it nice to hear it from someone who only months ago had actually been there. Surprisingly enough, she didn’t find herself jealous, only a little disappointed. She didn’t show it however, and instead said, “I suppose it’s a good opportunity to be able to attend more than one school. Different experiences and all of that.” It was true, though, and she wondered if Carmen would feel better about her move as time wore on.

We’ll get used to it, I’m sure,” she said cheerfully, because she knew that it was only a matter of practice, “although I’m glad that my parents did teach me English. I can’t imagine what it must be like for the students who never learnt it.” When Carmen agreed that they could be friends, Kathrine grinned. It was an odd thought, but it was something that she was happy about. “Great,” she said, before listening to her housemate talk about her summer. “That sounds like a relaxed holiday,” Kathrine said, “we had already moved here by then, so I just made my mother buy me the books for this school year and read them. A couple more than once, if they were really interesting. Are you doing alright in all of your classes so far?

Carmen smiled and nodded her head. Being in different schools was actually good opportunity for sure, she had to agree with it. "Well you are probably right about it," she said there with a weak smile. She still did miss her old school for sure but she knew she can't go back there now. She was also in time she will get used to being here in Hogwarts one day for sure. She wasn't really sure when it will be. She can't tell the future but she hopes it will happen soon. Being like lost puppy isn't that good actually. She doesn't really like it.

"Yeah you are right about it again," she agreed once again with this girl named Katherine. "I'm glad that I did learn English too or else I would be right now in so much trouble. It would be even more harder than it is right now," she said there with a weak smile again. "Well it was great one. Even if I wish it would been longer a little bit," she said and sighed. She missed her friends who she had back there where she lived. She can see them now more less than before. "I'm doing so far good in my classes. It's basically same as in Durmstrang just that they are in English and sometimes it takes me time to understand some words but so far I have done everything away what have needed to do even if it's takes bit longer time than before," she said and sighed there. She basically did translate it all to Norwegian first before she understood everything.
