| Starting life as an adult was – well, definitely different than Hunter had expected. It wasn’t like he’d never had a job before, so he thought that he’d had a pretty good idea of what it would be like to have one full time. It would be the same as all his part time jobs, except all day long. And having his own apartment? Just like having his own bedroom, only bigger. It wouldn’t be that hard. But apparently, he was wrong. Completely. Because being an adult was a hell of a lot harder than he’d thought. From day one, Auror training had basically completely consumed his life. Hunter had always thought that once you graduated from school, you could get a job and actually start doing it right away. After all, wasn’t that the point of school? But apparently, he’d picked a demanding profession, because his days involved a lot more than that. Being an Auror required a lot more than just what he’d learned in school. When he arrived in the mornings, he’d spend the day training with a senior Auror – working endlessly on things like defensive strategies, offensive spells, physical fighting tactics in the case of a lost wand, concealment and disguise, and useful potions.
But really, the training he took part in at the Ministry was primarily hands-on, and Hunter did well with most of it. He had basically no trouble with the physical aspects, and was possibly already better at fighting without his wand than some of the senior Aurors. Which was probably because he wasn’t the most passive person, and he tended to prefer not to use his wand, unless he had to. Or unless he got the urge to blow something up. He also breezed through potion making, because he’d already brewed most of them secretly in his dorm at Hogwarts. Even concealment was nothing compared to the work he had to put in when he got home every evening. Being an auror meant not only that he had to practice these things at work, but that he had to know the theory behind them. And he had to pass about a dozen tests to prove that he knew it. So, when he got home, he’d have no choice but to pull out one of the many books he’d had to purchase, and pour over all of it. History, particularly involving criminals and war; interrogation tactics; stealth tactics; and incredibly detailed information and theory on all kinds of dark and twisted magic. You had to know what you were fighting, after all. Hunter had thought he was done with school when he graduated, but he was wrong. And when he was done, he had to make his own dinner, clean his own apartment (which he did very rarely) and then go to sleep and wake up and do it all over again.
Which was why he hadn’t had any time to do all the thing he’d meant to do – the most important thing being visiting Ariel, which had been at the very top of his list from day one. And yet, here it was almost the beginning of October, and he still hadn’t made it to see her. He’d written her of course, and she’d told him her work schedule. So, finally clearing some time in his weekend, Hunter took a Saturday off and apparated to Hogsmeade. As soon as he touched down in the familiar, bustling street, he grinned. Because it had been far too long since he’d been there, and he missed it. But what he missed most was the castle, rising up imposingly in the background. He stared at it for a moment, almost longingly, but then moved on. Ariel would be getting off soon after all. He weaved his way toward Zonko’s, but didn’t go inside. Instead, he just leaned against the wall outside of the door and waited. Ariel didn’t know he was coming, and he wanted to surprise her. But waiting was more than impossible, and it basically took everything Hunter had not to go inside to see her.
But it wasn’t until she walked out of the door that he realized just how much he’d missed her – missed having her around every single day. He watched her for a second, a smile forming on his face – taking in her familiar features. She hadn’t noticed him – he wasn’t in an obvious spot for her to see him – and he let her get a few paces away before speaking. ”Excuse me!” he called out to her. ”Maybe you can help me. I’m looking for someone, I think she works here. She’s about this tall with blonde hair, and she’s pretty fucking awesome. Maybe you’ve seen her?” Hunter didn’t even try to hold back his grin.

| Ariel had been busy. Her last year had started with four days a week of work, Head Girl duties and too many classes. Why? Hunter had stopped working at Zonko's, the Headmaster obviously thought she was responsible enough to be Head Girl, and she had no idea what she wanted to become when she was done, so she couldn't miss out on subjects! It was all very overwhelming, but frankly, she was grateful. The reason was that Hunter had finished Hogwarts, and she had a feeling that whenever she'd get the time to relax, she'd feel pretty darned hollow. What was she supposed to do without Hunter?! So whenever she went to bed, she had no chance thinking about anything before she was asleep, when she woke up she was distracted running to classes, and when she was done, she either had to spend patrolling the hallways, sitting in the library or working.
Currently, she was working, and it was not a good day. Not because of rude customers, or lack of customers, but because there weren't enough to distract her from thinking about the times when Hunter would go to the backroom and get the two of them a butterbeer, and then just sit on the bench, laughing at each other. She missed Hunter so much. When she'd gotten her schedule, she'd sent it off nearly at once to make sure he knew when he would be able to meet her. But as a couple of weeks had progressed, and Hunter seemed to be busier than her, Ariel was loosing hope that she'd see him before the holidays.
The rest of the day went by in a slow-ish speed. Not as slow as working alone on a silent day, but too slow to be amusing. And when Ariel was finally done, she knew she had a couple of things to fix. But she was tired. At least it was only homework, and it wasn't as if she had to rush off anywhere. She did have time. And for once, she was happy. Maybe it was time to feel some on the void that Hunter left behind, and maybe she ought to hang out some with Lyra or check up on how Humphrey was doing, maybe just chill with Oliver in their Head dormitory? She probably ought to do that. Thank Merlin, Oliver was her counterpart. The two of them had always been good friends, and Ariel was so thankful for that. What if it'd been someone Ariel really disliked? Though she couldn't think of a person at the moment, it didn't mean she didn't dislike anyone. She grinned and left her boss behind, who was doing the last three hours of work on his own, and Ariel left the shop.
And then someone said 'excuse me' and for a quarter of a second, Ariel was about to turn around and give the person her attention when everything in her body froze. No ... way. Nuh-uh! WHAT?! Pretty fucking awesome was damned right though! And then she screamed, and some bypassers jumped. She didn't give a shit and just turned around with the biggest grin she could possibly muster and ran at Hunter, throwing herself into his arms. "HUNTER!" she shouted and started kissing his face like an idiot and then laughed and threw her arms around him again. "Hunter, Hunter, Hunter!" she just sang, basically skipping. Well... as well as anyone can skip when they're hugging someone. "I have missed you so much!" She stepped back and held him at an armlength away. She had so many questions. Too many questions! She didn't even know where to start, and it was quite possibly a very visible struggle. Finally, she just took a deep breath and let out the first thing that came to her mind. "Have you punched anyone yet?!"

| He could see it – the moment that she distinguished between a random stranger asking a favor and him. And to her credit, it was far before he’d pointed out that she was fucking awesome. She reacted instinctually at first, but before the word “excuse” had left his mouth, she’d caught on. Not that he was surprised – he’d know Ariel’s voice anywhere, even if she only uttered one syllable. If anything, her voice was what he missed most. His grin widened as he watched her mind try to catch up, waiting for her to turn around – but even Hunter wasn’t prepared for the shriek she released when she finally turned and saw him. He flinched a bit in response, but burst into laughter at the same time – mostly because the people walking past her practically leapt six feet into the air in fright. And he was pretty sure she startled up some birds in a nearby bush.
Doubled over in laughter, he wasn’t prepared for the moment that she hit him – or plowed into him, more like – and he stumbled backwards a few steps. But his arms caught her of their own accord, his subconscious still just as attuned to her as it had ever been. Regaining his balance, his arms slid more tightly around her waist, and he lifted her up into a hug, still laughing. ”Hey stranger,” he said through his laughter. And all the while, something calming settled in his stomach – something that was always there when he was with Ariel, that he hadn’t realized he’d been missing. Or, he hadn’t had time to notice it – but he already knew that when he left for home that night, he’d feel it’s void. Severely. But that hardly mattered, because he was nearly euphoric from being reunited.
And then he set her down and she was attacking his face and saying his name over and over and he burst into a whole new round of laughter at her excitement. ”Take it easy!” he laughed as she hugged him again, grinning and settling his hands on her waist. ”I mean, I know I’m attractive and it’s hard to contain yourself around me, but god Ariel there are children here! PDA!” he joked. And then she finally stepped back and he had a chance to look down at her, his eyes taking in the familiar lines of her face and the white-blonde color of her hair – possibly so light because of his surprise visit – and holy shit, he’d missed her. ”I’ve missed you too,” he responded earnestly. ”You have no idea.”
Ariel was clearly trying to figure out what to say next, and her expression changed a few times before she finally deemed something important enough to spit out. Hunter raised an eyebrow in amusement, grinning. ”A month without seeing me, and that’s the question you ask?” he teased her, shaking his head. ”Once, during training – but I was supposed to, so I’m not sure if that counts. Though there are some assholes at the ministry that deserve decked in the face, believe me.” And then, the next words fell unbidden from his mouth. ”I’m so sorry I haven’t been around.” It was great that Ariel was so excited to see him – but she shouldn’t need to be that excited, and he couldn’t help feeling a bit like he’d let her down. ”I didn’t realize how busy I’d be – I feel like I’m in school all over again, there’s so much shit I have to learn – I even have to take tests –“ But he cut himself off, because there was plenty of time to tell her everything. ”I have all night, though,” he said. ”So if you have some kind of hot date or something, the git’s just going to have to deal with being stood up,” he added with a teasing voice. Then, he held his arm out to her so that she could take it. ”Come on – I owe you more than a couple butterbeers,” he said, pulling her along with him toward the Three Broomsticks.

| Ariel barely even registered it that she'd knocked Hunter back a few steps, but she did notice his laughter, which just made her so much happier. Which shouldn't be possible at that point. She spluttered at his statement of being attractive and that children were around, because she was too damned happy to even think of a comeback. So she finally just settled on punching his arm. "Idiot," she muttered under her breath, trying to make a sour face, failing miserably, especially when he finally admitted to having missed her too. The best feeling in the world was when your best friend showed that he loved you just as much as you loved him. At least, in Ariel's world. Of course, she was still pretty much a kid, what would she know, right? But Hunter was the best person in the world, so in her book, there couldn't be anything better.
Ariel gave him a mischievous grin, nodding vigorously, waiting for him to actually answer her question. The possibility that he had punched someone was definitely there. Or something. And then he said 'once'. Ariel almost doubled over laughing, but nodded in an overly professional and understanding fashion and he said he was supposed to do so. "Hah, I'm sure there is. I don't even work there and I can already name one. Hm... What was his name again?" she said, exaggerating wildly, winking at Hunter. But then, what happened next totally threw Ariel off balance. Why was he apologizing? As she read his expression, Ariel's smile turned soft and she shook her head. "I don't blame you, Hunter. We both knew -well, at least I knew- that auror training would take up a lot of your time. Besides, I've been busy as a bee myself. So don't worry about it. Honestly," she added sharply; she knew that Hunter had always found it easy to blame himself.
Laughing again, Ariel beamed at Hunter. "You got that right. You're second to none, remember?" she said, twisting her head at an odd angle for effect, thinking back to the time in the Shrieking Shack when they'd basically renewed their friendship and made weird-ass pacts. Ariel grabbed his arm and started pulling him happily towards the bar. "Yes, yes, yes! You owe me loads of butterbeer. So much so, I think I'm going to get sick of it," she said with big eyes as they reached the door. Stepping inside, the place was crowded as usual on a Saturday, and she scanned the room, seeing a table by the window. "I'll grab the table," she said, leaving his arm and quickly walking to the table before anyone else could take it. She sat down with a thump, noticing now that she'd been standing around for seven hours. A new bubble of happiness swept over her as her eyes landed on Hunter again, crazy grateful that this was the person she'd be spending the rest of the day with. It was so good to have her best friend back, she wondered how it'd go when he left again.

| Hunter had been away from Ariel for this long before, over the summer, but it was definitely not the same. Three months apart didn't feel like nearly as much when they both knew they'd get to spend every waking moment together for the next nine, once school started. But this - this was different. They'd already spent summer apart, and although Hunter had seen Ariel at the train station while seeing his sisters off, he hadn't had a chance to see her again since. Of course they owled, but it just didn't make up for actually being together. And it was honestly hard to explain what Hunter was feeling now that he had her right in front of him - happy really didn't even begin to describe it. At Hogwarts, they'd been inseparable. Each other's other half - but that term never really hit home until now, when Hunter realized how much of himself seemed to be missing without her.
Hunter's grin didn't falter for a second when Ariel punched his arm - truthfully, he hardly even noticed. "Yeah, very funny smartass," he said sarcastically in reply to her comment, but fell quiet when she responded to his. He nodded, still silent, when she said she'd known he'd be busy. "I knew, too," he replied. "I guess I just - underestimated it a bit." But Ariel continued to brush it off, and her tone at the end made it obvious she wasn't going to put up with any of his apologizing shit today. And they had too much to talk about for Hunter to go on about something so stupid, so he dropped it, his grin widening again. "As it should be," he said, rolling his eyes at her expression. Before he knew it, they'd made it to the three broomsticks and were stepping inside.
Ariel rushed off to grab a table, letting go of his arm, so Hunter headed to the bar to grab drinks. "Two butterbeers," he said to the barkeep after pushing his way to the front. When he made it to the table that Ariel had claimed, he set one of the mugs down in front of her with a clank before sliding into the seat across from her with a grin. "And don't forget the cheese fries," he added, also setting the basket of chips and cheese down in between the two of them, instantly snatching one for himself and popping it in his mouth. "So, go on - how's seventh year? Aside from being head girl - which, they must have been desperate, by the way, considering your track record," Hunter said, laughing. It was definitely no secret that Ariel was the queen of pranks at Hogwarts. "My sister isn't being a pain in the ass roommate, is she?" he added.
"Oh, yeah," Hunter said quickly, as something popped into his head. "Here, I should give you these before I forget - just let me find them - " Hunter reached into his bag, which he'd used for school in the past and now used for all of his very important auror shit. After digging around for a minute, he finally emerged with what he was looking for. "Here, put these somewhere they won't break," he said, sliding a few small glass vials across the table toward her. "Not that I don't have complete faith in your potion-brewing abilities - I do," he started. "However, if you manage to fuck one up, just turn in one of those - Henley always requires them. Skele-grow, polyjuice - they're all labeled." Hunter stuffed his bag back under the table. "They're all perfect, obviously," he added with a grin. "Potions is a huge part of my aptitude test, so I have to train in it, even though I know how to brew everything on the list, so I have to buy the ingredients for this stuff anyway." Then, leaning over the table a bit, he added in a lower voice. "And there might be a bit of veritaserum in the unmarked bottle for you to use as you see fit." If that wasn't a useful thing for some sort of prank, Hunter didn't know what was.

| As he sat down across from her, Ariel took a mouthful of the delicious butterbeer. She sat it down with a thump and grinned at him. "Thanks," she said appreciatively, and then picked out a particularly cheesy fries for herself. Ariel pretended to look hurt at his comment of the headmaster being desperate, but eventually just nodded in complete agreement. He was totally right, there really must have been a lack of judgement going on. Or perhaps the idea of someone lenient was a good idea right now, with times being what they were. "Seventh year is stressful. I mean, I'd thought it would've been better, because I could go and choose the subjects I wanted to take and only the ones required for what I planned on doing when I finish, but I don't know what I want to do, so I can't afford to drop any of the subjects," she said, and though it was very stressing that she didn't know what to do with her life, her smile didn't drop. She was too happy to have Hunter to talk to. Ariel chuckled. "Lyra couldn't be a more chill roommate. Do you miss her?" she asked curiously. She did miss talking to the girl. It'd been a while since they had a proper conversation.
Ariel looked curiously at him as he bent down to get his bag. She hadn't even noticed he had one to begin with. "What is it?" she asked, but her question was soon answered as he gave her a few vials. Turning them over in her hand, she recognized his handwriting and smirked, at the same time shaking her head. She raised an eyebrow at him. "You don't think professor Henley would notice that I suddenly have an aptitude for potions? I mean, you're right, I'm not a hopeless case, but it really isn't my strong suit," she said, grinning. When he leaned towards her, Ariel unconsciously did the same and laughed. "Really? You know, Headmaster Grey really failed in appointing me Head Girl. I'll have control over the entire school if you keep spoiling me with potions," she said, winking at him as she leaned back in the chair, looking at the tiny bottle without a name, wondering just what she wanted to do with it. She could give it to a professor, but that would probably get her expelled, and she'd managed to stay in school for so long now, it would be a shame to waste it her last year.
She took a couple of more fries, chewed on them while looking thoughtfully out of the window, because pranks were too important to screw up. "Maybe I'll use it on Oliver and Victoria, let them hatch out their feelings," she said thoughtfully, but quickly shook her head. "Nah, I'm not much of a matchmaker, though. I think I'll stick with the territories I'm comfortable with. Like, making people look like idiots," she said, smirking proudly. She put the vials in the bag she always brought with her to work, and made sure none of them would be smothered by anything, or in danger of coming in contacts with one of the more explosive treats of Zonko's. She looked to Hunter and leaned on the table again. "So, you liking the potions part of ... eh... aurorship then?" she asked, not really sure what one would call the training Hunter was up to. "And how's the apartment? Is everything okay? I really wanna see it!" she said, suddenly super psyched.

| "Don't give me that look, you know I'm right," Hunter said, rolling his eyes, when Ariel tried to feign hurt at his comment. But it was his turn to make a face when Ariel admitted that she was taking every subject. "That sucks - though, I had to take just about every subject to even be considered for my position, so I know what you mean." Hunter lifted his butterbeer to take a swig before leaning his elbows on the table, his eyes searching Ariel's face. He wanted to tell her that it was no big deal - that she'd come up with something, which she would - but it truthfully wasn't that easy. To peg Ariel down to one profession was actually a lot harder than he'd thought. "You really have no idea what you want to do?" he said finally, choosing not to reassure her that nobody was ever really sure because she'd definitely heard that dozens of times already. "Maybe you should just do away with the boss and run Zonko's," Hunter said. "You'd be good at that. Or, start your own business, where people pay you to design epic pranks for them. You'd be the first to do it," he added with a grin. "Though, my career advice may not be the most reliable - I'm pretty sure I encouraged Aoife to be a sheep whisperer on TV in first year, and that didn't exactly work out so well, did it?"
Hunter was already shaking his head when Ariel asked if he missed his sister. "Nah, I just saw her. And if I was gonna miss either of them, it would be Lyn, anyway," he shrugged, reaching out for a particularly cheese covered fry before Ariel could get to it. "But it's okay, she doesn't miss me either." Truthfully, Hunter was more than aware that things between himself and Lyra had never really been patched up completely after Jack's death. It wasn't that either had done anything wrong to the other - they'd just both reacted the same way, by distancing themselves. And when Hunter should've forced his way through Lyra's wall, he hadn't. It wasn't that things were awkward between them, but it always felt like there was some sort of closure that they hadn't achieved. Like their sarcastic banter was just covering up a gaping hole that nobody else could see but them. But, that wasn't something for Hunter to bring up now, so he tucked it to the back of his mind.
"Everyone gets lucky once in a while, right?" Hunter replied with a smirk, when Ariel said Henley would notice. "Besides, they're only for if you royally fuck something up - or for if you don't have time. Or for if you just don't give a shit, obviously," he added as an afterthought, grinning. "She won't be able to prove where you got them from, anyway," he pointed out, shrugging. "Though, you can always use them if you don't want to turn them in. Dump some amorentia into Lyra's pumpkin juice and let me know what happens." That would be a sight to see, though still not as interesting as when he'd slipped Aoife the potion that made her fall in love with Seren. "I wouldn't say I like it - because there really isn't much potioneering to the job - as that it's the easiest part of training for me," Hunter said. "Some of the rest isn't bad either, but I have to know so much theory shit. I study more now than I did in school." Which was putting it mildly. "But you have to come see my apartment," he agreed excitedly, his eyes lighting up. "Over Christmas - I mean, I live in London now, so we don't have an ocean between us anymore when you're home," he pointed out. "And it's nice to be able to bring Rex with me," Hunter said, referring to his dog, who he'd had to leave behind for the past seven years while he went off to Hogwarts.
Taking another cheese fry, Hunter figured that he might as well bring up the other thing on his mind, despite not wanting to talk about anything potentially disheartening. But really, he didn't have much of a choice, so it was better to just get it out of the way now, so that they could move past it. "But listen, before I forget, I actually need to talk to you about something," Hunter said, leaning in and lowering his voice, but remaining relaxed so that he wouldn't raise any suspicion. "It's serious - I need you to do something for me." Though he hated to ask her. He hated to do anything to put Ariel in danger, but if this went the way it was supposed to, she'd not only stay out of danger, but be better equipped to handle it in the end. So, glancing around casually, Hunter opened his mouth to tell Ariel something - the only thing - that he'd been keeping from her for the past year.
"There's this thing - an organization - that's trying to keep things under control. Running under the radar, separate from the ministry, working against dark wizards." Hunter took another sip of butterbeer before continuing. "I joined last year - I couldn't tell you. You have to be referred, and you're sworn to secrecy once you join. And I mean, sworn," he said, an almost apologetic tone to his voice, because this was a huge thing to have kept from her. "Your sister's part of it, too. But, that isn't the point - I need you to do something. They need a student, they asked me who'd be best..." Hunter trailed off, giving Ariel a chance to process everything he'd said already before continuing. He didn't really doubt that she'd agree, but it was a huge secret to have kept from her, and he didn't want to overload her with information all at once.

| Ariel was pretty relieved that the words that came out of Hunter's mouth was 'you really have no idea what you want to do' and not some bullshit about having loads of time. Because some of her fellow classmates had already started to apply. Oliver was going to have an apprenticeship in the Department of Mysteries, for Merlin's sake! However, Ariel wasn't as stressed as she might've been if she was someone else. Ariel was the 'glass is always half-full' type of girl, so she figured she'd find it out sooner or later. But the workload was stressful. "It'd be awesome to take over a jokeshop, seriously, but I don't think I'd like to stay in Hogsmeade, you know?" Hogwarts was awesome and all, but seeing all the students after she'd graduated wasn't a very temptin thing. She did perk up at the mention of starting something herself. "Woah, that would be great! Imagine! Ariel Wilde, Consulting Prankster!" Ariel felt as if (and probably looked it too) things were falling into place. She couldn't imagine working in the Ministry, not really. She wouldn't mind being an auror, she supposed, but it wasn't what she wanted to do.
Ariel refrained from commenting on the Lyra-Hunter relationship. She knew it had been on the rocks since Jack died, and Ariel figured she could save talk like that for later when it wasn't ages since she'd seen him. That might be selfish, but it didn't exactly seem as if Hunter wanted to discuss it more than she did, so she let the subject trail over to potions. She shook her head, but she was grinning. "Fair enough. Besides, I think professor Henley absolutely loves me and Lyra. In the previous lesson there was only the two of us, and seriously I have never seen her so emotional! I mean, she wasn't crying or anything, but normally she just smiles and stuff, this time she made the classroom cozy and shit! Which was brilliant. But the potion we brewed was intense as fuck. I failed, of course. Well, I got an A, but damn!" Ariel laughed at the thought of making Lyra succumb to the lovebug. She wondered what actually would happen, but she'd never do that to the girl. Or would she...? "I'll have to consider that. I'm definitely using one or two of these for a prank here and there. It'll be awesome. I'll tell you all about it," she said, her voice smooth.
Ariel's eyes opened wide. "No, really?! You study more now? What is that madness?!" Ariel looked into open space for a while, blinking to get over the shock. Studying more when you'd finished school. Why?! Ariel then straightened up and looked Hunter squarely in his eyes. "Well, you've settled that for me, I won't become an auror! I really should start my own thing. Then I can study exactly what I want!" Ariel felt triumphant that she'd found the best solution, though she was sure it was not going to be as easy as that. Where would she even find the money to start her own business? Her worries vanished though, when he said she had to come see the place. "Yes, yes, yes!" she said happily, basically skipping in her seat. The fact that Hunter actually lived in London hit her again and her grin widened. "Christmas is going to be awesome this year! I get to visit your apartment, Darcy, mom and I are finally doing some shopping together, and I'm going home for once! I don't think I've been home for Christmas since my dad was diagnosed!" Though this wasn't a happy kind of tidbit, Ariel had always found it natural to talk about her father after he died, and she wanted to keep it that way. After all, denying it only made it harder and more painful. Ariel had never seen his dog, so she looked at him with raised eyebrows. "Hunter... Is Rex a Schaefer?"
Ariel's grin drifted a bit when Hunter leaned forward and he was suddenly a lot more serious. Not too serious, but Ariel could instantly tell that something was up. Tilting her head to the side, Ariel leaned a bit forward herself, her brow furrowing. At the word 'organization', Ariel suddenly thought he was just messing with her, but before she could react, he continued on, saying Darcy was in it too. What was this? Ariel's curiosity spiked, but she didn't interrupt until he finished. "This is about the Reapers, right?" Ariel hated the name of that group. For one, they'd killed Jack's brother. They'd attacked the ministry and kidnapped the minister. What hadn't they done? But why did this new organization need a student. And why Ariel? Ariel leaned back a bit. "What do they need me to do?" Ariel knew what her answer would be. It didn't matter how dangerous it was. If Ariel had the chance to fight the stupid ass people that tried to control the world, then she would do it. No stopping that.

| "I miss Hogsmeade," Hunter replied when Ariel said she wouldn't want to stay there. "And Hogwarts, and Netherlands." Of the two, Hunter wasn't exactly sure which one he missed more. "I mean, London is great and all, but I'm not used to having absolutely no space." That was a bit of an exaggeration - Hunter's apartment wasn't that tiny, but he was used to living on a farm at home, and having the freedom to roam Hogwarts' expansive halls and grounds. And then, there was London. Ten million blocks of city, in every direction. "No offense, but I don't know how you've lived there so long. If you saw the farm, you'd know what I mean." Hunter popped a few fries in his mouth, chewing it while listening to Ariel talk. "I like the sound of it," Hunter told her with a grin, swallowing his food. "You could pull it off, if anyone could - or, you could make a shop for muggles that sells magic things that muggles would pay a fortune for. I mean, do you have any idea how much a bottle of like, Peruvian Darkness Powder would be worth to a muggle?" A shit ton.
"Henley's the shit," Hunter replied, grinning. "I think she had to know that I was taking ingredients from her all those years. But I think she was too impressed with my work to even say anything," he added, shrugging. "And an A is still passing." Hunter snorted at Ariel's reaction to the fact that he still studied all the time. "Way more than I ever did in school - it's why I've been so busy." Hunter couldn't help the slightly apologetic tone in his voice, because he did feel bad for not making it out to see Ariel sooner. "And you wouldn't want to work with me?!" Hunter asked Ariel, feigning hurt. "What, was I not a satisfactory coworker in the past?" In all honesty, Hunter completely understood why Ariel wouldn't want to be an auror. Like, maybe she wanted to have a life, for starters. So did Hunter - he hadn't realized just how much work it would be once he got started. But, if anyone could start their own thing and actually earn a living off of it, it would be Ariel, so his money was definitely on taht kind of career choice for her.
Ariel was practically bouncing in her seat at the thought of Christmas, and her excitement was contagious and Hunter smiled widely back in response. "Hell yes, it will. I'll be going back to the farm just a day or so before Christmas, to see my family, but I'll be in London every day before that - I might as well just give you a key," he added, laughing. Because he was sure that Ariel would be at his apartment every waking moment over Christmas break - whether to do something fun with him, or to lay on the couch and watch TV while Hunter studied, she'd be there. "How is Darcy, and your mom?" Hunter asked, the corner of his mouth turning up in a soft half-smile as she mentioned her dad. Hunter was always a little jealous of how easy it was for her - Jack had died years ago now, and Hunter spoke to him in his own way. But even now, he had a hard time mentioning him so nonchalantly in conversation. "He's a Hollandse Herder," Hunter told Ariel when she asked about Rex, slipping into what was technically his native tongue - though, Hunter wasn't sure if he could consider it that anymore. He hardly used anything but English now, unless he was home. "Dutch Shepherd," Hunter explained. "But it's almost the same thing. He's old now, but he still has a few years left in him."
Ariel wasn't stupid, and she caught on quickly about the Order. She figured out straight away that it involved the Reapers, and Hunter just nodded in response. of course she was in - he'd know she would be. "We need someone inside Hogwarts," he told her. "They don't think the school's entirely safe anymore - we need you to get something together. Just, a group, to practice - offensive and defensive spells, you know? Anything that might help." Looking around one more time, to be absolutely sure nobody was watching them, he leaned in a bit further. "We need a student army," he whispered. "The professors aren't enough - if something happens, you'll need to be able to hold it off if we can't get there in time. You have to be ready." It probably sounded like he was referring to the group needing to be ready, but Hunter meant it mostly for Ariel alone. Ariel had to be ready - Hunter already knew that losing her would be more than he could take.

| Ariel smiled at Hunter and sighed. "I'll probably miss Hogwarts a ton, and probably even Hogsmeade, but I think that if I did stay behind, I'd just feel as if I didn't move forward," she rationalised. She grinned at his description of London and nodded along. "I don't think I could stop loving London. But before we lived in Knightsbridge, we actually had a house ourselves with a nice garden. It was probably nowhere near as big as your farm, which, by the way, I really want to visit, but it was superweird moving into the city and into a two floor apartment with no garden." She didn't miss living outside of the city though. London was her home now, and she was looking forward to living in it and working there fulltime. But only with a job she could enjoy. She looked at Hunter with big eyes at his question of how much she thought muggles would buy for magical artefacts. "A shit ton," she said, her voice dreamy.
"Merlin, Hunter! Stop feeling bad for having to work your butt off!" Ariel burst out, laughing at his insane need to apologize all the time. She then grinned wickedly. "You were a fine coworker. When it came to slacking off. You know. Desk wise." She laughed again, letting the feeling of happiness fill her. She had really, really missed him. And particularly when she was working at Zonko's. It was so weird to work every day without Hunter around. She didn't have anyone to goof around with. Though most of the clientele of Zonko's were automatically pretty great, none were really Hunter.
Ariel nodded; Christmas was family time, no matter what. Except if you were at Hogwarts, of course. But Hogwarts was family. "Of course you will! I'll just come the earlier days! Are you gonna spend New Years in Netherland?" Ariel herself had no plans for New Years, but she was sure Darcy would, so Ariel had every intention of tagging along with her sister, lest she got a better proposal. "And I think you should give me a key! Then I can do something fun!" Like decorating his home and make it all Christmas-y. Ariel shrugged. "Darcy's superbusy herself, she's just been to France and Bulgaria in the last week alone. But I think she's enjoying working with international ministries. Mom's mom. She's a bit absent, but I've talked a lot with her this time around, actually. She's sending me too many letters now, but it's a change I like," she said with a big grin. Her mom had always been absent since her dad died, and Darcy had always had to step up, but now she seemed to be getting back on her feet again. Ariel smiled when Hunter so easily spoke the words of the dograce in Dutch. She'd usually forget that he was actually not from Britain, as the English accent had pretty much been imprinted on him. "It'd be nice to have a dog," Ariel concluded.
The idea of needing someone inside of Hogwarts that was not a professor, but her, scared her a tad, but at the same time, she knew it was a kind of pressure she could deal with. She was already forming ideas in her mind of how to get this going. She'd need Oliver. And she would have to be careful who she enlisted, though the Reapers had mostly stuck with people above the student years, there had been reaper professors and some students in the past of what Ariel had gathered from Darcy. So she'd have to be careful no matter. Ariel could see the worry in Hunter's eyes and she smiled, taking his hands into hers. "Don't worry, Hunter, I can do this. I'll be ready," she said, both talking about her own safety and the group to gather. She felt the pressure though, she really did. It was like a nervous feeling, though with a bit more at stake than simply embarrassing herself. "I should use the Room of Requirement, right? I could've used the Shack, but I think that's a bad idea; anyone could notice spells being cast from the viewpoint of the house," Ariel added, her face scrunched up in thoughts.

| ”I worked!” Hunter replied defensively, but instantly grinned and laughed. ”Or, at least, I supplied the butterbeer. And supervised.” In all honesty, Hunter and Ariel had always done a more than decent job running the shop when it got busy. Unsurprisingly, they worked well together, not only because they were both the two most awesome people on the planet, but because their work ethic complemented each other well. Ariel was the friendly, easily approachable one that customers preferred to ask for help, while Hunter tended to be watchful and had no problem telling a customer that if they weren’t happy with a price or a product they could get the fuck out. And of course, there were the multiple occasions that he’d literally kicked some teenage boy or creepy man out of the store for staring at Ariel a little too long – not that he’d ever told her about those things, because it wasn’t something that she should have to worry about in the first place.
”I don’t know yet,” he replied, taking a drink of his butterbeer. ”I’m not sure how much time I can get off for the holidays.” Technically, Hunter wasn’t ever really off, because if some massive evil happening took place and he was called in, he’d need to go. But as a trainee, that wasn’t likely to happen. ”And I don’t know if I trust your definition of something fun,” he told her, giving her a pointed look. ”God only knows what I’d find if I left you there alone while I was at work.” She’d probably shove all of his underwear into the freezer, or fill his apartment with portable swamps.
Hunter listened as Ariel talked about her family. Darcy was always busy since she’d started her job at the ministry – Hunter knew how much Ariel had missed her last year. At the time, he hadn’t ever thought he’d wind up in the same position, but now he understood. ”Yeah, I see her occasionally at work, but I never have much time to stop and talk to her, or she doesn’t.” Normally, it was just a quick Hi, how are you, have you talked to Ariel lately on both of their ends, and then they moved on, as they were both normally on their way to something important. He smiled at what Ariel had to say about her Mom. He knew that after Ariel’s father had died, her mother hadn’t been much support to her – though, it wasn’t as though Hunter couldn’t understand closing yourself off after losing someone. ”That’s good,” he replied earnestly. Hunter had met Ariel’s mom more than once, and would never tell Ariel that she made him slightly uncomfortable. Only because she was more of a Veela than Ariel and Darcy, and it was incredibly unnerving to find a woman that old attractive, let alone your best friend’s mother, and he just preferred to avoid her if he had the ability to.
”I know you can,” he told her when she told him she would be able to pull it off. But I can’t lose you. He couldn’t push the thought – the possibility – from his mind. Most people didn’t understand that the world was full of more evil than they thought, and Hunter had already lost a brother to it. Losing Ariel would be more than he could take – which was why it was good that he was giving her this task. Because she’d be prepared, and they’d be in touch, and she’d have an entire student body and the order rushing to her aid at a moment’s notice if she was in trouble. As Ariel reached for his hands across the table, Hunter closed his eyes and released a breath, focusing on the warmth of them against his skin. ”Yes, use the Room of Requirement. We’ve never seen anyone else at the shack, but we don’t have any absolute guarantee that nobody else knows about it – besides, I don’t want anyone sitting in my chair,” he added, his tone lightening to bring the earlier mood back.
In the end, they stayed and talked far past curfew, but curfew had never stopped them before and there was no question that it wouldn’t stop Ariel now. Besides, she was head girl – who would reprimand her? But inevitably, they had to leave at some point. When they stepped back out into the cold outside air, still laughing about whatever they’d just been talking about, it was well into the night, the moon hanging lazily beside the castle’s silhouette. Unwilling to part ways, Hunter walked with Ariel all the way to the entrance gate, which he technically wasn’t allowed to pass through. When they reached it, Hunter came to a reluctant halt and turned to her. ”You seriously have no idea how badly I’ve missed you,” he told her, stepping forward and wrapping his arms tightly around her. In no rush to let her go, Hunter rested his chin on top of her hair, taking a deep breath. ”I won’t be this busy forever, you know – I just have a lot going on right now,” he told her. ”But I’ll come back as soon as I can, and I’ll write.” Hunter tightened his arms around her and kissed the top of her head before finally releasing her from his grip. ”Be careful. I’ll be in touch,” he said, backing away and meeting her eyes. Then, more reluctantly than ever, he apparrated home.
