| Aoife had a lot of dreams. Both types, of course. The weird ones when she slept, and the hopes and aspirations for the future. But most of the latter type had originated in her first couple of years at Hogwarts. Like, to be the most prominent and charitable sheep farmer of them all, or to never give into the horrible pressure of being a teenager, but to carry on being awesome, even when everyone else was moody and/or gross. But a big one for at least a couple of weeks had been her ambition to be Head Girl. From the moment she'd discovered the system which put two people at the top of the Hogwarts ladder, she'd wanted to be one of them. The idea had gone away, like most of hers did, but then Darcy became Head Girl, and that twat Evan Head Boy, and it had occurred to Aoife that since she was better than both of them, she could easily earn the title.
Only, that didn't happen. She arrived for the first day of seventh year to realise her dream had been crushed by the git Headmaster, and she wasn't special at all. For about five minutes, as she waited for the sorting to finish, Aoife had been devastated. Nothing seemed to be going her way - this could potentially the worst seventh year, or even just the worst year, ever at Hogwarts. But again, she forgot shortly, and instead enjoyed the chicken they had at the feast. House Elves were excellent at cooking chicken, it turned out.
But now it had crossed her mind again. And she thought about it a lot one day instead of paying attention in Potions. Who was Headmaster Grey to tell her she couldn't be Head Girl? She could be whatever she wanted to be, that was what her mam had always told her when she was little. And who was she to be oppressed by a silly old man who didn't know what he was doing? Aoife was pretty sure she had all the freedom of speech in the world - so who could stop her proclaiming herself as special as she wanted to be? And she wanted to be Head Girl level special. Which was why she had concocted a clever plan, and a great defence in case someone tried to contradict her right to be Head Girl.
So that was why Aoife was sitting at one of the tables in the common rooms with a piece of plain card and some coloured crayons, neatly working on a homemade badge. Nobody could argue with the badge. The original plan had been to make it look realistic, but as she worked on it, and it turned out a bit messy, she decided it didn't matter what the badge looked like, as long as it was a Head Girl badge. So she scribbled her name underneath the Head Girl part, and drew an incredibly artistic and biologically accurate sheep at the top of the badge. Pleased with her work, she stuck a safety pin on the back of the card so she could pin it to her robes and everybody would see it, and beamed down at the artistic masterpiece. No, Aoife would not be oppressed. She would be the strong independent woman she wanted to be. The strong independent Head Girl she wanted to be.
For a moment, she was unsure of what to do next, whether to wander round school for people to see her badge, or whether to wait until dinner and reveal it when everyone was there to see it. But before she could decide, Aoife caught sight of familiar brown, not-as-long-and-fluffy-as-it-should-be hair, and instead of leaving the common room, headed over to Hunter. "Hunter!" she called, grinning. And then, when she was within close hearing voice, she lowered her voice back to normal. "Look! I'm Head Girl!" She indicated to her badge proudly. | |
